I’ve always been a keen sportsman, to the point of choosing my secondary school on the basis of which school had the biggest sports field. I played most sports at school, some to county level, but when I left school I discovered a love of martial arts and studied Shotokan Karate and Tai Chi. When work got in the way of training I moved into Medieval Reenactment, yes fighting in a suit of armour with swords.
Unfortunately a career got in the way of sport and I spent some of my twenties and all of my thirties concentrating on work and family and I steadily expanded thanks to a lack of exercise and a very poor diet until I decided to do something about it, so I do know how you may be feeling if it has been years since you last exercised.
I had a few false starts, but my trigger point was thinking (whilst in armour fighting) I can feel my heart about to jump out of my chest and that was it, I had to get fit and change my lifestyle.
It was a slow start, I lost a few pounds first, joined a starter group with a local Stevenage running club, did quite a few exercise classes and lost about 6 stone in weight. Along the way I’ve completed numerous 5k’s, 10k’s half marathons but the biggest achievement has to be completing the London marathon in 2011 and 2017 whilst raising money for charity.
Even though I now lead a healthy lifestyle, I don’t deprive myself of the odd treat, I also still have some wobbly bits and consider myself a work in progress.
But as they say the rest is history, I qualified as a Gym Instructor soon afterwards and decided to take my training to the next level by becoming a Personal Trainer, soon followed by Sports massage, sports injury and acupuncture – I get a real buzz from helping others achieve their goals whilst staying healthy and having fun.
